Bill Maher is a comedian, actor, political pundit, and television host from the United States. He is most known for his HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher (2003–present) and his late-night show Politically Incorrect (1993–2002), which aired on Comedy Central before moving to ABC.

Maher hosted a show called Politically Incorrect, an American late-night, half-hour political talk show that aired from 1993 to 2002. It debuted on Comedy Central in 1993 and ran for three seasons until 1996.

On the show on September 17, 2001, Maher condemned US foreign policy and suggested that the perpetrators of the September 11 terrorist attacks were not cowards, despite being horrible individuals but that America's relationship with the rest of the world was cowardly. The remarks were highly denounced, and while Maher eventually apologized and clarified the meaning of his remarks, advertisers pulled their advertisements for the show. In 2002, the show was canceled.

In 2014, Bill Maher was invited to give a commencement address at the University of California at Berkeley. The speech was almost canceled after some student groups launched a petition claiming his views on Islam were "dangerous" and “harsh”. Within 24 hours, an online petition had gathered over 2,500 signatures.

Who tried to cancel Bill Maher

Khwaja Ahmed a member of the Campus Middle-Eastern, Muslim and South Asian coalition, launched the Change.org petition, stating that “Bill Maher is a blatant bigot and racist who has no respect for the values UC Berkeley students and administration stand for”.

Khwaja Ahmed further asserted that, “In a time where the climate is a priority for all on campus, we cannot invite an individual who himself perpetuates a dangerous learning environment”.

Student body representatives also voted against allowing Bill Maher to give the commencement address. It’s worth noting that student groups in the United States championed free speech since the 1960s and only recently made this about face.

These attacks on Bill Maher came after weeks when he made headlines by discussing Islam on his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher.” He stated during a conversation with Actor Ben Affleck that “Islam is the only religion that acts like the mafia that will fucking kill you if you say the wrong thing”.

Who defended Bill and Free Speech

Despite all the efforts to stop him, Bill Maher gave his much-anticipated commencement speech at the University of California Berkeley in December 2014. Nicholas B. Dirks, the university's chancellor, had to set aside the student leadership’s vote, stating that the university would not rescind the invitation. And as such, Professor Dirks is hereby awarded Cancel Comeback’s, Free Speech Champion Medal of Honor.

Maher, during his speech, denounced the petitioners, saying that the petitions contradicted Berkeley's historical commitment to free speech. Maher alluded to this issue throughout his graduating remarks but did not directly address the disagreement. He said, "I recognize that this university, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Berkeley free speech movement, made a statement by choosing me for this speech, and I would like to say I appreciate that, and I’d also like to say: I think you made the right statement.” Despite his critiques before the address, Maher received standing ovations and shouts from the audience.

How to support Bill Maher

Bill Maher now hosts a new show called Real Time with Bill Maher, an HBO talk show that airs once a week. Like his former Comedy Central and ABC series Politically Incorrect, Real-Time with Bill Maher featured a panel of guests who analyzed current events in politics and the media. Unlike the previous show, visitors are usually more knowledgeable about the subject: the board includes more experts, such as journalists, professors, politicians, and fewer actors and celebrities.

We can all now support Bill Maher by getting HBO and watching his show. Maher is a liberal champion who always has confronted the public to uphold free speech during his career. Presently, he is on a course of fighting for environmental concerns, especially climate change, as he believes climate change is a serious concern.

Maher is also an established author who has written several books where he has shared critical points, opinions, and facts, making him one of the best-selling authors in the world. Purchasing some of his books, if not all, would be massive support in championing his course on climate change and free speech.

Bill Maher regularly embarks on a cross-country tours of the United States. His 2022 comedy tour will take place in June, July, August, September, and October, with stops in locations such as Philadelphia, Denver, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, and Nashville, to name a few. He will appear in two shows, one in Washington, DC, and the other in Las Vegas.
